A*spire Programme

The JLC A*spire programme is aimed at supporting gifted and talented students to reach their highly ambitious goals. We achieve this by offering support alongside challenging opportunities which are individually tailored to each student.

Students who have completed our A*spire programme have gone on to destinations such as the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, various Russell Group universities, and fantastic higher apprenticeships with global companies including JCB and Jaguar Land Rover. Students also access highly competitive courses such as Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Dentistry, among others.

The A*spire team organise a range of additional opportunities for our students throughout the year. These include trips to a range of universities throughout the UK, as well as skills workshops, student challenges, talks from external speakers and specialist mentoring from members of our college Senior Management Team.

Work Experience

Here at JLC we offer optional work experience opportunities for our students because this can give you an advantage when applying for a place on courses or apprenticeships where you will come up against other strong candidates, and this industry experience can make the difference. It can also help you to develop employability skills which will be vital to your future. We currently work with over 260 employers covering a wide range of sectors including medical professions, education, legal professions and accountancy.

All students within the A*spire programme are advised to complete at least 1 MOOC during their time with us. MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) are made available from a long list of universities and institutions and there are countless subject areas to choose from that are very specific, so there is always something for you. MOOCs are typically short courses which you complete in your own time, and they can be great to put on an application and to discuss during interviews.

A large part of the A*spire programme is the support element. We like you to take advantage of all of the opportunities on offer to enhance your time at college, but we also know that you might need help from time to time. We offer regular drop-in sessions for A*spire students where you can talk to us about any problems that you are having or get some advice on any aspect of the programme, but you can book appointments with careers advisers within college at any time to get some guidance. We also offer support with applications to university or apprenticeships as well as interview preparation and practice when you need it.
