About this course

This course is ideal for learners who have a creative streak and enjoy creating full size working prototypes, scaled furniture, sculptures or architectural models using a range of materials. There is the opportunity to create ideas within several areas including product design, architecture, jewellery, ceramics and sculpture. Students should enjoy practical work and problem solving.

Who is this aimed at?

This course is recommended for anyone planning a career in the creative design industry. 3D Design A Level offers much of the creative content of a Design Technology A Level without the theoretical written examination. All work assessed is portfolio and practical outcomes. Many students go on to further education in areas including Product Design and Industrial Design, Engineering, Furniture Design and Architecture.


You will:

  • Enjoy problem solving and practical work

  • Have an interest in either Furniture Design, Architecture, Product Design, Ceramics, Jewellry, Engineering, Industrial Design, Motorsport Design or Automotive Design

  • Be preparing for a wide range of higher education courses and employment


What will you learn?

Course content:

  • Developing ideas through sustained investigations informed by the ideas of artists

  • Experimenting with a range of 3D media, materials and processes.

  • Visually recording ideas through photography, drawing and 3D processes

  • Presenting a personal, informed and meaningful final outcome.


Core Units:

Component One: Personal Portfolio - You will create a project based on a theme of your choice, you will be required to work creatively, with some independance, documenting your journey from an initial idea through to a final design outcome.

Component Two: Externally Set Assignment - You will create a project based on a theme set by the exam board.
